By supporting people with learning disabilities and people on the
autistic spectrum to go out into the community and take part in
leisure and social activities, we give family carers a short
flexible break from caring. How it all works
Project staff and volunteers run and organise the groups and everyone
who is a member of the scheme is part of at least one monthly group. People in the
groups are matched on interests, ages and existing friendships. Family carers ans paid carers are always welcome to join us too, and many already do.
We book taxis for people who want one,
and some people make their own way on public transport.
We ask people to pay £5 towards the cost of their taxis. (This is for both journeys).
People on the scheme pay for their own activities; an average trip
costs about £14 for transport, a meal and the activity.
We get many discounts in places in Sheffield and try to make things
as cheap as possible.
We have eight regular monthly groups:
- Three Saturday groups, who do things like bowling, the cinema,
trips to parks, bus trips to Derbyshire. (People only attend one Saturday group.)
- Two ladies groups go out for meals and bowling. There is lots of chat and catching up on these groups.
- One blokes group goes bowling and to the cinema,
changing each month.
- One group for some of the younger people on the scheme seems to do different things each time as the members of the
group take it in turns to decide what they are going to do. This group has been to the circus, to Laser Quest, the cinema, trips
to the pub, bowling, the Chinese buffet and much more.
- The last group that we run is a group for people who live in the
Chapeltown area to go to the pub for a meal and a catch up on the
latest news.
We also do lots of other activities like going to the theatre, pop
concerts (Girls Aloud and Westlife were popular). We also go to rock
concerts like Motorhead, and always have a trip to the seaside
in the summer.
We are open to suggestions for more new and exciting activities.
