The SCP coordinates 6 groups on a monthly basis as well as running
special events at regular times throughout the year.
The groups meet in different local areas as well as at a city centre location.
We always offer to arrange free transport to enable family carers
to attend meetings, and excellent refreshments
to compensate them for giving up their valuable free time.
Wednesday Lunch Club
A monthly meeting held on the second Wednesday of every month.-
Lunch, raffles, occasional speakers and regular trips out.
Hillsborough Family Carers Group
A local group that meets monthly on Mondays to provide mutual support
and has regular speakers arranged at the request of the carers.
Pakistani Family Carers Group
A growing group, facilitated by our bi-lingual worker.
The group meets every 2 weeks in the Firth Park area of the city,
with regular input from the worker, the local Citizens Advice Bureau,
and the Learning Disability Health Support Team. A Halal meal is cooked on the premises.
The meetings alternate between speakers about different services,
and activities like chair-obics and aromatherapy.
Central Group This is a group especially set up for family
carers of young adults with learning disabilities (aged 18-30)
to enable them to get together to share support and information.
They meet the second Friday of each month at the Carers Centre
on Trippet Lane.
North Sheffield Family Support Group This group meets
once a month in the North of the city to enable carers from Chapeltown,
Stocksbridge, Deepcar, High Green, Grenoside and Ecclesfield
to get together for a chat over a cup of tea or pub lunch.
South East Group Meets usually on the last Thursday of the
month at the Milestone, Crystal Peaks. - Lunch, speakers and chats.
SCP also organises annual events like Eid parties, hot chocolate, mince pies and bingo sessions and
strawberry cream teas. Occasional trips out are also arranged
for groups, - trips into the Peak District
for pub lunches or a day trip to Cleethorpes.
Although meetings with speakers are still popular amongst some carers, more family carers
are now requesting that the SCP focus on social and networking
opportunities. Many family carers are suffering with
consultation fatigue and just want the opportunity to get
together with other people who truly understand what it is
like to be a carer for someone with a learning disability.
