Supporting family carers of adults with learning disabilities in Sheffield,
Sharing Caring Project currently works with more than 500 family carers. SCP aims to work in partnership with statutory and voluntary services to remove
the barriers, inequalities and isolation faced by older family carers of
people with learning disabilities. By providing advocacy, accessible information, group and individual support,
the project aims to support families to in their caring role and enable them
to plan for the future with greater confidence.
SCP organises a number of groups throughout Sheffield, and produces a quarterly newsletter.
Case Work
SCP workers carry out a limited amount of case work
with individual families. (This work is only limited because
of time constraints for the project workers who are all part-time).
Much of the work is around providing family carers with information,
linking them into appropriate services and supporting them
to advocate for what they need. In many cases, the support
needed is largely emotional as some people find it hard or
prefer not to come to groups and feel extremely isolated.
In these instances, the SCP workers will pop in regularly
for a cup of tea and a chat and often pick up on issues that
can be dealt with before it turns into a bigger crisis.
