Sunday Lunch Club has now been reinstated.
The Sunday Lunch Club has been a success right from the start.
It is aimed at people with learning disabilities who live by
themselves, people with learning disabilities who live with older
family carers and their carers come along as well. This last part is very
important since work with the Sharing Caring Project had shown that
there are very few activities that support individuals and their carers to do things
together, particularly when the carer is getting older and more isolated.
The Sunday Lunch Club meets once a month, usually on the third Sunday
of every month and around 30 people come each month. Transport to the
Lunch club is by taxis since people come from right across the city.
When people come in they have a drink and the volunteers take their
'order' from the menu. We have had a variety of meals, usually according
to what people have asked for. We've had roast chicken, beef, lamb,
meat and potato pie and there is always a vegetarian option - Watch out
for our yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes!
Puddings are always popular with things like sticky toffee pudding,
spotted dick and lemon sponge surprise - always with low fat and
diabetic options available.
Then there is usually time for some games of bingo
with one of the members calling the numbers.
The Sunday Lunch Club has been a great success for everyone involved.
We had a particularly brilliant time at Christmas when everyone had
Turkey and all the trimmings, a present and we all sang seasonal songs.
Not only does the Sunday Lunch Club offer good food - it has also
reunited some families who have not seen each other for years, renewed
friendships and helped people build new friendships. It has been lovely
for us to work on and we would like to thank everyone who comes
along and the volunteers for all their help in making it such a success.
