A life skills course for adults with a learning disability.
The Progression to Independence (PTI) course is a college course which runs two days a week (Monday and Tuesday) and
is based at Sheffield Mencap. All learners get certificates for the courses that they take, which can include art,
cookery, self-advocacy and exercise, with some embedded basic skills like communication and literacy.
The PTI course helps people to get the confidence they need to develop ways of becoming more independent.
We All Have Choices!
We all need some control over our lives and the things that we do. We make
our own decisions and our own mistakes - that is how we learn to become independent.
The chances for doing this are not as great if you have a learning disability.
We All Need Support!
The PTI course offers learning support in a safe environment so that all students
can try new activities, building on their own skills and abilities so that they
can become more self-confident, more self-aware, and leading to greater independence.
This greater independence will be demonstrated in different ways by the students.
For one it might mean getting a job, for another doing voluntary work or inviting friends round for tea.
Lynne Ward is PTI Co-ordinator.
