George's story

When George talked with the Sheffield Telegraph recently about is life, he had just come from taking his Aunt, who is physically disabled, to the Post Office to collect her pension, a regular task for him.

Like many adults with learning disabilities, George still lives with his family. As his Aunt has got older the tables have started to turn and now George is her main carer, wheeling her to the shops and helping her with the housework.

In the decade since he first attended Norfolk Lodge, George has come on leaps and bounds. He used to be driven to the door by volunteers, but now he travels alone from his house in Hillsborough.

"I've learned how to use the tram and I love catching it and coming here", he explains.

"I really like gardening and making craft cards too"

George,48, has also found a girlfriend and enjoys attending Gateway, the evening social club where the pair dance or talk about music or days out.

"I met Sarah here and it's really good. I've made a lot of friends and I'm very happy"

The picture shows George on a visit to the Yorkshire Sculpture park with Day Services at Sheffield Mencap.
