The Learning Hub at Sheffield Mencap

Many people with learning disabilities are keen to learn more life skills so that they can lead a more independent life. On Mondays and Tuesdays, we run a life skills course at The Learning Hub, a College-based accredited course.

Life Skills courses lead to greater independence

All students work towards an accredited qualification for the courses that they take, which include cookery, self-advocacy, interview skills and preparing for work, computers, health& safety and exercise. All through the course they continue to work on basic skills such as literacy and numeracy.

Being a student of the life skills course can have a huge impact on the person's life. As well as learning new skills, our students improve their communications skills and become more self-confident. They also have the opportunity to make new friends and make the most of their potential.

Students at The Learning Hub will be able to talk about their own learning and will choose from a range of options such as cooking, keeping safe, looking after the home, computers, travelling and money and much more! There will also be the opportunity to learn about a hobby such as photography, making DVDs, pottery, sport, drama & art. It's a chance to meet other people, make new friends and have fun!

To find out more about this service and how much it will cost please contact darrencoggins@sheffieldmencap.org.uk and arrange a visit or a taster session.

We also provide the option of an educational course which meets at Norfolk Lodge on Monday & Tuesday early evenings and Wednesday afternoons. Here we help learners develop their skills, become more confident and meet new people. Learners have the opportunity to partake in a variety of activities which are fun as well as developing practical skills.

We also operate a non-accredited course on Wednesday morning from 9.30am-12.30pm or 1pm-4pm on Wednesday afternoon, for a charge of £20. It also runs sessions on Monday and Tuesdays between 5.30-7.30pm for a charge of £10 per session. These courses can be free to attend subject to the benefit criteria or funding through Direct Payments.

When I first came here I didn't have very much and I was struggling to do thing sat home and being here has taught me how to cook on my own."
